The world renown "Pink Promise" Diamond will go up for auction later this month at Christies's in Hong Kong. Weighinging in at a robust 14.9 carats, this fancy, vivid, intense pink diamond would be the most expensive gem ever offered at Christie's Hong Kong. Its quality listing of VVS1 makes this stone extraordinarily rare. Pink diamonds are rare to begin with. Fewer than 2% of all diamonds mined are diamonds of color, and a tiny percent of those are pink. We still do not completely understand how diamonds claim a pink hue, which researchers refer to as a "structural defect".
So, if you happen to be in the market for a $40 million ring, and pink is your color, make sure to get to Hong Kong by November 28th!
